課程說明

典故、成語，是英美語言文化的結晶，也是西方文明的資產。這些生動有趣的表達方式，來自莎劇、荷馬史詩、格林童話、伊索寓言等，體現於反應世界局勢的現代新聞語境。本工作坊介紹「新聞英文」中的文學、神話、宗教典故詞，成語，術語等，以尋找詞源的作業讓同學加深印象，並實作練習活用，增進進階級英文閱讀與寫作實力，更透過閱讀英文新聞理解西方世界。

1.    認識英美新聞中常用的成語、譬喻、典故。
2.    掌握這些成語、典故的歷史意涵、延伸意涵、現代語境。
3.    能將這些詞彙，運用於合適的情境，寫出符合新聞語法的句子，
4.    增進英文閱讀能力，認識西方歷史、豐富英美文化素養。
※ 課程包含講授與討論：講授部分以雙語進行，討論部分鼓勵使用英文。
※ 每堂課皆有課堂練習或課後練習，同學須參與。

Idioms and Analogies are the jewels of the western world. The source may be traced back to Shakespeare, Homer, Aesop’s Fables, The Bible, and modern fictions. Comprehending the history and stories behind these phrases will increase the capability of advanced vocabularies and writing skill.
After this workshop, I hope my students will: 
1.    Get to know 60 idioms, analogies, and terms commonly used in English news.
2.    Grasp their historical connotation, extended meaning and modern application. 
3.    Know how to use these phrases in appropriate context and news writing. 
4.    Greatly increase English reading and writing capabilities; enrich cultural understanding and knowledge. 
* Students participation in online activities and assignments are required.
* The lecture will be conducted in both English and Chinese. English is encouraged in discussion.
